Fuelling Around podcast: Tom Hartley Jnr on why electric cars are ‘rubbish’

One of Britain’s most famous car dealers, Tom Hartley Jnr is the latest guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Hartley Jnr has built a reputation for selling the world’s most exquisite performance and classic cars over his career and has built up a cult following on YouTube and Instagram.

He sat down with hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss the impressive cars in his epic showroom, owning an incredibly rare Ferrari 288 GTO and his take on electric vehicles.

Tom Hartley Jnr details why internal combustion engines may have to come back

During his chat with the boys, Hartley Jnr was asked by host Plato about his thoughts on electric cars.

“Rubbish. Absolutely rubbish,” Hartley Jnr stated. “It’s just so sad, you know I’m looking here and I look underneath me (from his office window looking over his showroom), there’s a 1953 Aston Martin DB3S and a 1965 Ferrari 275, and a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL gullwing and a 1928 Bentley, are we ever going to say ‘there’s a 2024 i4 or a Tesla Model 3’?

“It’s like the ancillary items that you get on an engine that can be replaced. The car now is just a life part like a battery. Well, it is a battery isn’t it?

“It’s like you replace your battery, you now replace your car. I think it’s very sad.

“I also think we may see a reverse. I wouldn’t write off the possibility of internal combustion cars coming back.

“All of these manufacturers said they were going to be all-electric by such a day. I mean, when did Land Rover state they were going to be all-electric? That went out the window quite quickly.”
